The Stateless Problem

In the realm of artificial intelligence interactions, most encounters begin without any prior knowledge or background. When you initiate a conversation with an AI agent, it possesses no awareness of your identity, your core interests, the specific tasks occupying your time, or the precise results that align with your personal goals. Each new query demands that you painstakingly rebuild the foundational context that ought to be readily available. Session after session, you find yourself repeating explanations that the system should have already absorbed and retained.

This limitation is not a defect in the technology itself but rather its inherent default condition. AI models are designed without built-in mechanisms for preserving memory between interactions unless explicitly provided with persistent data to reference. Unfortunately, the vast majority of users never take the step to implement such continuity.

Consequently, the AI remains broadly competent in a general sense but fails to adapt precisely to your unique circumstances. This is akin to the distinction between a novice employee who grasps the basic requirements of the role through technical proficiency alone and a seasoned executive assistant who intuitively understands your individual preferences, behavioral patterns, and strategic priorities without needing constant clarification.

A well-crafted context profile effectively bridges this divide, enabling more personalized and effective AI assistance.

What a Context Profile Is

A context profile constitutes a comprehensive, easily accessible document—typically spanning around 20 pages in length—that encapsulates all the essential details your AI agents require to operate efficiently and make informed decisions in alignment with your needs.

Essential components to include at a minimum encompass:

  • Your identity and professional responsibilities—detailing your position, the nature of your business or organization, and the types of choices you routinely handle.
  • Immediate priorities and ongoing initiatives—outlining what demands urgent attention, what remains in a holding pattern, and what looms on the horizon.
  • Personal work style preferences—specifying your favored communication methods, desired tone in responses, daily scheduling rhythms, and fluctuations in your energy levels throughout the day.
  • Critical personal and professional relationships—identifying key individuals you must maintain contact with, along with the underlying reasons and pertinent background on these vital connections.
  • Forthcoming travel arrangements or alterations to your routine—highlighting any shifts that could influence the agent's operational behavior or recommendations.
  • Boundaries and prohibitions—clearly defining decisions that necessitate your personal involvement and subjects that demand your direct oversight without delegation.

This methodology was inspired by Flow, the CEO of Lindy, who maintains an even more extensive iteration of this document. According to him, it represents the most impactful single action he has undertaken to elevate the performance of his AI agents. With this foundational knowledge in place, the agent transcends its role as a mere generic instrument and evolves into a tailored ally intimately familiar with your operational style and expectations.

What Changes When You Load It

The transformative effects of integrating a context profile become evident across virtually every type of interaction with your AI systems.

Consider a practical illustration: I have configured a customized daily podcast generator, an automated AI process that scans my accumulated reading list each morning, transforms selected articles into synthesized audio narration, and compiles them into a personalized podcast episode for my listening. While the basic framework proves valuable on its own, its true potency emerges upon incorporating my context profile into the system's instructions.

Rather than delivering straightforward summaries of the content, the AI now analyzes and discusses the material through the prism of my specific worldview. It draws explicit connections between the discussed concepts and the projects currently dominating my workload. It proactively identifies and highlights actionable steps that resonate directly with my prevailing objectives. Employing identical AI capabilities and source materials, the resulting output shifts dramatically, solely because the agent now possesses a deep understanding of its audience—namely, you.

This enhancement extends broadly to other applications. For instance, an AI tasked with processing and suggesting responses for incoming email operates with greater nuance when informed about your distinctive communication preferences and the nature of your relationships with individual correspondents. Similarly, an agent preparing briefing materials for an upcoming meeting delivers far more relevant insights when equipped with historical context regarding your interactions with the involved parties. Even an agent overseeing your task backlog functions more effectively by prioritizing items in accordance with the categories of work you aim to minimize or eliminate.

Importantly, the context profile does not inherently augment the raw intelligence of the AI models. Instead, it refines their precision and relevance, ensuring outputs are meticulously attuned to your individual context and requirements.

The Failure Mode: AI That Keeps Forgetting You

One of the most prevalent pitfalls I observe in AI usage is what I term the 'one-night stand' mentality. You engage in a highly productive exchange where the agent delivers exactly what you need. Satisfaction achieved, you conclude the session—perhaps by closing the browser tab. Upon your return for the next interaction, however, the agent exhibits complete amnesia, retaining none of the prior insights or customizations.

This results in zero continuity, absent memory retention, repetitive clarification queries in every encounter, and outputs that, while functional, lack the customization necessary to perfectly suit your circumstances.

Such issues are entirely addressable, but they demand a shift in approach. Rather than sporadically assigning tasks to your AI agents and crossing your fingers for optimal results, treat them akin to onboarding a new team member who requires thorough induction into your world. The solution lies in developing a robust, persistently accessible context profile that you systematically integrate into your primary AI tools—not exhaustively across all agents, but selectively into the two or three that interface with the most critical facets of your daily workflow.

How to Build Yours

The most efficient method for generating a context profile avoids the tedium of composing it manually from the ground up, which often yields a superficial and broadly applicable result lacking depth.

A superior strategy leverages AI itself to conduct a guided interview process. Launch an instance of ChatGPT and instruct it to assist in crafting a context profile designed to empower your AI agents in autonomous decision-making on your behalf. Request that it conduct an interview by posing targeted questions. Respond candidly and comprehensively to each inquiry. After dedicating 20 to 30 minutes to this dialogue, direct the AI to synthesize your responses into a cohesive, structured document.

Proceed to meticulously review and refine the output. In most cases, this process will produce a document ranging from 5 to 15 pages. Store it in a convenient, shareable location—Google Docs proves particularly suitable, as numerous AI platforms can directly ingest and process content from such sources.

Next, incorporate this profile into your highest-priority agents. In my setup, these include my email summarization tool, my morning briefing generator, and my meeting preparation assistant. Since these three systems intersect with substantial portions of my daily activities, their calibration through the context profile yields tangible improvements in efficiency and relevance.

The Payoff

When functioning optimally, the benefits of a context profile manifest subtly at first, gradually becoming more pronounced over time.

You will observe the agent ceasing to solicit redundant explanations about your professional role or background. It begins formulating assumptions about appropriate tone and style that align seamlessly with your expectations. It proactively elevates pertinent information without prompting. Moreover, it demonstrates awareness of situational variances—such as periods of travel or densely packed meeting schedules—and dynamically adapts its recommendations accordingly.

The suboptimal scenario involves an AI that perpetually speculates about your identity and needs, leading to friction and inefficiency. The ideal outcome features an AI that operates from a position of established familiarity.

Your context profile serves as the vital conduit spanning these extremes. Invest the time to construct it once, commit to periodic updates as your circumstances evolve, and systematically deploy it within your most valuable AI agents to unlock their full potential.
